This week I love this project by Russian student Andrew Ivanov.

The idea was a branding project on a free subject, which can sometimes be much harder than it seems, so I’m glad the Andrew choose the fascinating subject that is Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. I would love to see this taken further, more products, more ideas and more branding.

Love/Hate : Luis Alves’s Pattern Posters

This kind of artwork is not the kind of thing that I tend to like. I usually find it too busy and and cramped to enjoy the illustration.

Having said that, I really love these posters by Luis Alves. The colours are great at the patterns are intricate without being too fussy. And they are all drawn by hand.

This week, I love these hand-lettered quotes by Sean McCabe.

Sean is an American – deep breath – Type Designer, Illustrator, Interface Crafter, Musician, Christian, Husband, iPhone Photography Enthusiast, and Coffee Lover, phew, that;s a long list.

All his projects are pretty damn cool, but I especially love this series of quotes. There is lots more work on his website, including some very cool ‘making-of’ snaps.

Love/Hate : Concept Art by Michael Kutsche

This week I am a little bit obsessed with the concept art of Michael Kutsche.

Michael Kutsche is a self-taught German artist based in Los Angeles, California. He’s worked on character designs for films like “Alice in Wonderland”, “John Carter”, and “Thor”.

I love his style and the characters he designs, be sure to head over to his website to check out a wider range of his work.

Love/Hate : Monster Milk by Eskimo

Like a lot of people, I don’t drink a huge amount of milk, in fact other than in my tea and cereal, I don’t drink any milk at all. Milk is boring. If I’m thirsty I’ll drink water and if I’m after something healthy then I will reach for the fruit juice, other than that my drinks either contain copious amounts of sugar or copious amounts of alcohol.

Then along comes Eskimo, a company who have rebranded milk and made it into a fun and quirky drink. I love the concept, the copy is pretty atrocious but hey, English is not their mother tongue so you can hardly blame them, and it might even be deliberate.

Love/Hate : Long Distance Relationships by Peony Yip

This week’s Love/Hate post is a series of prints by Peony Yip called ‘Long Distance Relationships’. I absolutely love the juxtaposition of the ‘real’ person and the ‘away’ person. The style of illustration is not quite my thing, but I just found the idea so touching that I had to post it.

Love/Hate : Digital Portraits by Chanin Suasungnern

Digital art is something that has me on the fence. The thing is, nowadays software like Photoshop has become so user friendly that at the click of a button, the user can create something that would otherwise have taken hours.

Fliters and effects have become so sophisticated that ironically, they have become quite mundane. Ever thought you were looking at some great watercolour just to find out that you were actually just looking at a photograph ran through a filter? Because I have.

Having said that, I do love digital art when it is well done, and Chanin Suasungnern‘s art is very well done indeed. He mixes traditional drawing techniques with more modern, digital techniques and the results are very cool. What do you think of digital art?

Love/Hate : Eurostar Posters

Living where I do in London, I am very close to the station where the Eurostar departs from and arrives. This means that it is actually officially cheaper (and faster) for me to hop on the Eurostar and go to Paris than it is to go to some places in the UK, which is ridiculous.

To promote the Eurostar and the new vamped up Kings Cross Station is this cool series of posters by Parisien agency Leg. I love the “when was the last time you visited London?” ones especially and I’m happy that they didn’t focus on tired old stereotypes.

Love/Hate : Ento & Edible Insects

One year as a christmas present, I bought some chocolate covered giant ants for my Mum. Naturally, as soon as the packet was opened I wanted to try one, and although I wouldn’t say I hated it, they will never find their way onto my weekly shopping list.

This fantastic project, called Ento, challenges our preconceptions about eating insects and tackles the issue of food security. The team behind it are Aran Dasan, Jacky Chung, Jonathan Fraser and Julene Aguirre-Bielschowsky and chef Kim Insu.

“It’s not just about introducing a new food, it’s about understanding human perceptions and psychology, then using the design of innovative experiences and strategic thinking to drive cultural change.”

Dried Cricket Mince, anyone?
