Graphic Design: Only God Forgives by Joel Burden

This project by Leeds based graphic design student Joel Burden for a special screening of ‘Only God Forgives’ is pure genius.

“UV lights would be installed inside the screening room to reveal message as guests enter. This also reflects the neon lights of its context, Bangkok. Heat sensitive inks are also applied. In the heat of a summer day (film was released in July) message clarity would fluctuate (poster). The material that is handled would also fade under the warmth of human touch, for example when gripping the popcorn box.”

I love this series of posters by Austrian designer Ines Gamler for the collaborative website ‘Let’s Travel Somewhere’.

“Let’s Travel Somewhere is a collaborative project that aims at high quality travel photography. The mission: to capture the essence of every country through stunning photographs and gripping stories.”

Artist Showcase: Fabian Ciraolo

I am such a huge fan of this artwork by Chilean artist Fabian Ciraolo. He’s taken famous characters and has effectively ‘hipsterised’ them, turning them into modern and oh so cool versions of themselves.

Every time I look over these I have a new favourite, right now it’s Beetlejuice – no wait, Chaplin – no scratch that, it’s Princess Diana…

Branding: Breadshop by Scott Na’auao

Hawaiian designer Scott Na’auao worked on this great branding project for breadshop, a specialty bakery in Honolulu.

I love the simplicity and rusticity of the design, the stamp, the tape, the beautiful business cards, and what a great tag line (Breadshop – established daily).

Branding: Back and Forth Music Festival by Marcel Bachran

Now this is really something that you can get your teeth into, a branding project so complete and so spot on that I could look at it for hours.

Marcel Bachran worked on this project for the Berlin-based music festival Back and Forth, an acoustic festival lasting 4 days.

I really, really hope that they actually painted a pedestrian crossing like that because it looks fantastic.

Product Design: Opposite Friends by Julian Nuñez

I really like this project by Argentinian designer Julian Nuñez, all about the opposites that we come across in everyday life.

“The future and the past coexist in the objects around us, there is no one without the other. Natural complement to something artificial. That’s why the “Opposite Friends”, are a group of characters who represent complementary aspects of the world.”

Branding: Paper Cup Coffee House by Charlotte Fosdike

I absolutely love this branding for the Paper Cup coffee house by Australian graphic designer Charlotte Fosdike.

I love the polkadots with the aged finish, I love the handwriting-style typography in the logo but mostly I love the simple but effective posters.

Artist Showcase: Portraits for Tss by Evgeny Parfenov

When I search for inspiration in art I don’t just look for beautiful or accomplished paintings, but also for interesting and unique ways of representing the subject.

This is exactly what I found in Russian artist Evgeny Parfenov. I really love these portraits that he did for Tss magazine.

Branding: Nankin Lab by Pauerr

Nankin Laboratory is an experimental design studio that works through the philosophy of using destruction as a construction agent.

When it came to their branding, Pauerr decided what better way to ensure ‘pure’ destruction patterns than by using children, so that’s exactly what he did. The ‘construction through destruction’ idea is strongly present throughout the whole branding, but my favourite piece is the pencils that you have to snap in half in order to use them.
