Product Spotlight: Cocoon by Micasa Lab

Cocoon is described by the designers at Micasa Lab as “furniture you can live in”, and they’re not kidding. You can add pillows, storage, lights and even a fully functional sink.

I have no idea why they decided to plump for the colours they did, it makes the whole thing look cheap to me, like a giant kids toy, but the idea is awesome. I love the thought of being in my little cocoon in the garden on a rainy night, just listening to the raindrops.

Now I just need to buy a cocoon.

And a garden.

Product Design: Making Made Collection by Okum Made

Following on from last week’s post about the most beautiful pen in the world – ahem, probably – is another great Kickstarter project by a guy called Okum Made.

The premise is simple, he has taken a range of standard, everyday items and has made them beautiful. And as every designer will know, making things complicated is easy, it’s making them simple that’s hard.

“Relying on craftsmanship, each piece is created by hand in-house to make sure every detail feels just right.”

Product Design: Re-Ply by Dan Goldstein

I absolutely love this chair by Dan Goldstein. Not only do I admire it for it’s obvious ecological value, but I also happen to think that it looks pretty damn cool.

It’s super easy to set-up, holds a heck of a lot of weight and it swivels. The down-side? For the time being this chair only exists in the world of Kickstarter, but with just over a week to go and almost double the amount he were after, I don’t think Dan will have any problems building it.

Product Design: The Modern Rope Stool by Minki Kim

The Modern Rope Stool by Minki Kim is a great little project inspired by the Korean instrument the Jang-ku.

It’s held together by the tension created by the three ropes and a dowel, eat that Ikea.

Branding : Urban Tree Salvage by Dave Tupper

I love this branding by Dave Tupper for Urban Tree Salvage, a fantastic furniture company that re-uses trees that have been destroyed by desease or urban development.

“Our challenge was to brand the company in a way that was in tune with their green philosophy. As a result, all the pieces were created from printed scraps, one colour ink and wood off0cust from current projects.”

Product Spotlight : Freischaukler by Uli Feuersänger

The other day on StumbleUpon I was asked to ‘thump up’ this chair design to drum up publicity and votes. I diligently clicked through to check it out and I like it so much that I decided to share it on the blog.

The chair is by German designer Uli Feuersänger and you can vote for it yourself over here.

I love the rocking chair aspect to it, that when combined with the rigid body and geometric shape make for a very interesting chair indeed. And the way that the footstool tucks into the chair is very smart.

“The active adjustment of the chair to the various movements and proportions of the human body result in an extraordinary and exciting new seating experience. One’s focus is always below the suspension, thereby enabling a controlled and dynamic sitting at the same time.”
